TECHNOLOGY AND TRENDS bound by fine spray mist and subdued Fig. 4: Ceiling high-pressure fine spray nozzles pressure of approx. 10 to 25 bar. When a glass bulb bursts, the pump unit of the extinguishing system is started automatically via a pressure switch / flow indicator and increases the pressure in the pipe system to maximum 90 to 160 bar at a pressure in the sprinkler head of at least 50 bar. The high pressure and the matching dimensioning of the outlet openings ensure for an optimum fine mist distribution of the extinguishing agent. High-pressure fine spray extinguishing systems can also be used additionally for the targeted dissipation of smoke through ceiling openings and the extinguishing mist-smoke mixture from the respective fire floor can be used as an opening nozzle via the ceiling openings of a roof surface opening automatically (spray flood system). This system part is tripped by a fire alarm system in two-alarm dependency immediately after outbreak of the fire. Fig. 5: Art warehouse with exhibitions particularly worthy of protection Advantages of high- pressure fine spray systems Fire fighting begins immediately after fire detection Extent of the damage is reduced significantly Spreading of fires is prevented Extensive development of smoke can be prevented to the largest extent System technology module, variable and flexible Water and energy consumption significantly smaller compared with conventional sprinkler systems Relieving the environment by less amounts of contaminated extinguishing water Emission of harmful fire gases in adjacent parts of the building and to the environment is low as a greater proportion is Conclusion High-pressure fine spray extinguishing systems offer a flexible and effective alternative to conventional sprinkler systems as well as additional advantages (see info box). More new extinguishing systems are currently in the development phase. ■ Author Dipl.-Wirt.-Ing.
