TECHNOLOGY AND TRENDS Taking and evaluating thermograms The focusing and image frame are naturally also important when taking the pictures. Thermograms can however, be corrected subsequently to a certain degree using software in event of an incorrect or unfavourable camera setting. Insufficient focusing, the image frame as well as the measurement of deficient boundary conditions can only be corrected to a limited extent. These include extreme winds, heavy rain, fog or snowfall. Parallel to the thermogram, a photo should also be taken using a digital camera in order to be able to make it easier to allocate weak points and leaks later on during the evaluation of the thermograms. In doing so, a separate digital camera with a resolution of at least 10 megapixel is recommended more than the integrated digital photo function. A higher resolution enables subsequent zooming in of system details that allows further conclusions in the scope of the interpretation. The time required for a correct thermographic examination on-location is at least two hours and another four to eight hours must be taken into account for the evaluation and preparation of the report. Thermograms should already be examined in advance during the measurement in order to obtain an initial impression of the measurement object for plausibility checks. For this first on-location evaluation, modern cameras have many functions available. The device-dependent evaluation functions include the display of the temperature scale, the position and the value of the minimum / maximum temperature, selective cursor / multipoint / multi-range temperature, etc. The actual evaluation using the software included in the scope of supply is carried out in the office. The evaluation software can display thermograms on the computer monitor, edit Source: Testo The evaluation software can analyse thermograms and compile them to a perceivable thermography report. evaluation and detailed documentation of the thermograms. When choosing the service provider, one should take note of their qualification, the scope of services offered, experience in the respective application area as well as respective references. A qualified thermography report should include the following important details: Customer, contractor, climate data (indoor / outdoor temperature, weather, sun radiation, wind, etc.), building data (address, system type, floor plan with all compass directions, material), camera data (manufacturer, camera model, technical data). The most important information in the report is naturally the image information (data and recording time, colour scale, material-specific level of emission, etc.), interpretation and conclusion for each thermogram each supplemented by a photo taken with a digital camera. ■ Author Dipl.-Ing. Do it yourself, or commission a servive provider? The preventive system inspection requires professional IR cameras where, depending on the detector resolution and camera model, you will have investment costs between 5,000 and 50,000 Euro. The price for used devices that are a couple of years old are between 20 and 50% under the new price. Rental prices depend on the camera module are between 150 and 500 Euro per day. The time and costs for training must also be considered (basic training course, 2 to 5 days: approx. 500 to 1,500 Euro; certification course, 5 days: approx. 2,000 Euro). The investment for purchasing the camera and training are omitted if you decide to use a thermography service provider. The costs for this depend on the scope of services, from the measurement object and from the task. The following should be included in the offer of a certified service provider: arrival, allowances, necessary work time and device technology, all material costs as well as the perceivable FeuerTRUTZ digital Subscribe to the free FeuerTRUTZ Magazine ePaper at www.feuertrutz.com/magazine FeuerTRUTZ International 2.2016 21
