Editors‘ Comment Going to the limits Dear Readers, With preventative fire protection, it is a frequent occurrence to define limits and to operate within a specified framework. This affects, e.g., the determination of the fire resistance of components such as doors, glazing and wall constructions, but also the length of emergency escape routes, etc. Limit values even play an important role in the algorithms of sensors that are used in active fire protection systems, such as the question if and when an alarm should be issued. In this edition of FeuerTRUTZ International, you will find two articles where the authors describe fire protection fields, where the framework conditions deviate strongly from those usual in structural engineering. You will find the article about extreme temperatures and very fast fire developments in the petrochemical industry on page 6. It is less surprising for the requirement of special equipment and design specifications in order to effectively protect petrochemical plants against fires. In the article “Fire Prevention and Fighting on Board the ISS“ on page 14, we are going one step further – or so to say, taking a great leap. On the one side, the author described which fire protection measures the NASA applies on-board the ISS and which technologies are suitable for the conditions prevail there. On the other side, the author also explains how fire behaves in zero gravity (or better, microgravity). As, amongst others, thermals in space have a completely different influence on the flame pattern than on earth and thus change, e.g., the spread of fire. I hope you enjoy this interesting lecture with the one or other “borderline experience”.
