TECHNOLOGY AND TRENDS Thermography: Anticipation of the Emergence of a Fire In order to prevent fires, thermographic cameras can be used as a preventive measure. However, expert knowledge is required in the process. What does the camera have to do, what does the operator have to do? Which benefits does the thermography have to offer and which error sources are lurking when recording and assessing?  Marian Behaneck According to statistics of the insurance companies, the amount of fire damage that is caused by electric defects is increasing. Mechanical friction, faulty insulation, cracks or other component defects may also cause fires. Using infrared (IR) measuring technology, technical systems can be inspected and heated up components localised. By performing periodic IR camera inspections, defects can be detected and subsequent damage avoided. The thermography control is a quick, uncomplicated and reliable method for damage prevention. Without having to interrupt running operations, problems and potential hazard points can be detected and eliminated before major damage results for the system and environment. Defects on electric motors, bearings, rollers or damaged insulation can be located just as overheated transformers or cables, clamping points and fuses in switch cabinets. Special IR cameras can even detect leaks on gas lines from safe distances. Thermography cameras simplify the control and maintenance of mechanical or electric systems. Smooth, safe production processes and operating procedures are only possible without harming the environment if machines and systems operate reliably.
